How to work out how much tile to buy
Measure the length and width of each room in feet and multiply them to get square feet. Add the rooms together, then add extra for cuts and breakage. A straight layout needs about 10 percent extra. Diagonal, herringbone and pattern layouts need about 15 percent. Small or irregular rooms need a little more.
Tile is sold different ways: by the square foot, by the sheet for mosaics, by the piece for large tiles, and by the bundle for Versailles pattern. The calculator rounds up to whole sheets, pieces or bundles and respects minimum order sizes. Keep a few spares from the same lot for future repairs, because natural stone can vary between lots.

How much tile do I need?
How do I work out how much tile I need?
Multiply the length by the width of the area in feet to get square feet, then add 10% for cuts and breakage, or 15% for diagonal and herringbone layouts. Example: a 5 x 8 ft floor is 40 sq ft, plus 10% = 44 sq ft.
How are mosaics counted?
Mosaics are sold per sheet, and each sheet covers about 1 square foot, so the number of sheets equals the square footage you need.
How are Versailles and Roman patterns sold?
In bundles: Versailles pattern comes in 8 sq ft bundles and Roman pattern in 9 sq ft bundles, with a minimum order of 10 bundles.
How much trim do I need?
Measure every edge the trim runs along in feet. Most trim pieces are 12 in long, so one piece covers one linear foot; add one or two extra pieces for corner cuts.
How are large tiles sold?
Tiles 12x24 and larger are sold per piece, with a minimum of 5 pieces. One 12x24 tile covers 2 sq ft.
