How to Choose a Natural Stone Backsplash

A backsplash is a small area with a big effect. This guide walks through stone, pattern, finish, trim and care so you can choose with confidence.

1. Start with the room

Look at your countertop, cabinets and floor. A veined countertop usually pairs better with a quieter backsplash, and a plain countertop can take a bolder tile. Warm cabinets suit Ivory travertine or Crema Marfil. White or gray rooms suit White Carrara or Thassos.

2. Choose a pattern

See mosaic tile patterns explained for how each looks in a room.

3. Choose a finish

Polished tile shows veining and reflects light. Honed tile is matte and hides marks. Tumbled tile looks aged. On a wall behind a range, many people prefer honed or tumbled because they are more forgiving. See the finishes guide.

4. Plan the edges

Decide how the backsplash ends. Pencil trim gives a finished top edge, and a chair rail gives a more traditional line. The trim guide explains each piece.

5. Work out the quantity

Measure the width and height of each wall, subtract windows and outlets as needed, and add extra for cuts. The tile calculator does the math.

6. Seal and care

Kitchens bring oil, wine and acidic foods. Seal the tile and grout, wipe spills right away, and clean with a pH-neutral cleaner. See how to seal marble tile and stone care.

7. Order a sample

Natural stone varies from tile to tile. A sample lets you see the color and finish next to your countertop in your own light.

Common questions

Is marble a good backsplash? Yes, if you seal it and wipe spills promptly. Acids can etch it, so honed finishes can be more forgiving.

How high should a backsplash go? Many go from the counter to the underside of the wall cabinets. Some go to the ceiling behind a range.

Can I use travertine? Yes. Choose filled or honed tile for a smoother surface that is easier to clean.
