Large 18x18 travertine tiles in cream, noce and scabos laid with narrow grout lines

18x18 Travertine Tile

18x18 is a popular floor size. Big tiles mean fewer grout lines, so rooms look larger and cleaner. Choose tumbled for a soft, old-world look or honed for a flat finish.

These are large, heavy tiles, so check that your floor is flat and ask us about freight for big rooms.

When is 18x18 the right size?

18x18 works best in medium and large rooms such as living rooms, kitchens and entryways. In a very small bathroom, a smaller tile like 12x12 or 6x6 often looks better and is easier to cut around fixtures.

Grout lines and layout

With fewer grout lines, the floor looks calmer. Laying tiles straight is the most traditional look. Laying them on the diagonal makes a room feel bigger, but it needs more cuts and more extra tile.

Check your floor first

Large tiles show a bumpy floor. The subfloor should be flat and firm before you lay tile. Your installer will tell you if it needs work.

Heavy tile, big orders

Large travertine is heavy. For a whole room, ask us about freight.

Finish the edges

Add matching baseboard along the walls and trim where the floor ends. Trim is cut to match the tile color.

Questions people ask

Should I choose 18x18 or 12x12?

18x18 has fewer grout lines and a bigger look. 12x12 is easier to handle and fits smaller rooms and tighter layouts. Order samples of both.

Can I use 18x18 on a wall?

You can, but it is heavy. Most people use it on floors and use 4x4 or 3x6 on walls. Ask your installer.

Tumbled or honed for a floor?

Tumbled has a soft, old-world look and hides marks well. Honed is flat and matte. Seal either one.

Do you have matching trim?

Yes. Baseboard and other trim pieces come in matching colors.
